Actively Interviewing
This organisation is scheduling interviews as the applications come in. Don’t miss your opportunity, apply now!
This is a fantastic opportunity to join this fast-growing charity at an exciting time and make a significant impact as our first Development Director. You will be responsible for our fundraising strategy and setting up and professionalising our fundraising function. Our aspiration is to grow our income from £60k pa to £250k pa over the next 5 years. You will have the backing of a committed group of Trustees and volunteers who are eager to help and support your work.
As well as setting up and establishing our function, the Development Director will be responsible for fundraising for the MEF across several areas, and for developing funding initiatives for our future. You will help build relationships with people and organisations, securing philanthropic and other support that will help to fuel our programmes.
We are looking for someone with a great track record of success in fundraising, who can thrive in a small ambitious team. We will expect you to represent our interests in a range of public and private contexts; to be a confident and pro-active verbal and written communicator; and a skilled networker with a strong track record of relationship building.
The Charity
In 2011 we first worked with 17 years olds in one state school, and since then the MEF has grown to partnering one-fifth of London state schools, nearly 100 schools. We offer something very special to students, individually or as groups – the chance to plan and carry out adult-free a significant non-academic personal challenge, chosen by themselves, and which is theirs, they are in the driving seat. Our award winners develop greater confidence and resilience, stronger teamwork skills, enhanced social capital, and greater employability with stronger CVs and UCAS forms.
Our Schools’ Team visits schools to offer students the opportunity, monitors their applications and safety, and give them expenses for their projects. In 2022/23 we had nearly 4000 assembly sign-ups, who submitted (as groups or individuals) 600 applications: finally, there were 500 awardees.
The charity has at its root the story and the values of Lt Mark Evison, who at the age of 26 sustained mortal wounds in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2009, while trying to get his platoon to safety when they came under attack. He continues to inspire young Londoners from all backgrounds.
What we are looking for
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated fundraiser, who will secure regular income and drive forward fundraising for our vision – to make opportunities for personal growth accessible to all 17 years olds in state schools in London, enriching young lives, improving well-being, and growing personal dreams, all at a reasonable cost.
We want someone with a breadth of knowledge across a portfolio of income streams, but with particular skills set and experience in generating income from small and medium business and corporate donors, major and regular donors, trusts and foundations, and statutory services. They should have robust experience of developing and securing income from new income streams, generating leads and successfully engaging prospects to drive income plans. There is the opportunity to grow income from regular giving, legacies, and developing a patron programme.
The post is up to three days a week, with scope for flexibility of time for the right candidate.
The ideal candidate will have 5+ years fundraising experience, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and confidence working with a range of different stakeholders. Experience of working in a similar organisation with a track record of securing five figure gifts, and a knowledge of data base systems is highly desirable.
We offer 25 days holiday pa (pro rata) plus public holidays, and employer contribution to pension.

We empower people with the literacy skills they need to succeed in life. Together we're helping people change their stories. You could join us to develop and lead a new major gifts programme.
What you’ll be doing

You will manage a portfolio of existing major donors and conduct prospect research, developing bespoke stewardship of donors giving gifts from £5,000 to £50,000.
As a result of the pandemic and cost of living crisis, the shape of disadvantage in the UK has changed significantly and we’ve seen the fastest growing child poverty in decades. We are expanding our work to meet this growing need and have developed a new strategy to address the risk of social and economic exclusion.
This is a great time to join a thriving charity with ambitious growth in a role that will truly make an impact on our mission and gain significant personal development opportunities.
What we’re looking for

Why our work is so vital
Literacy changes everything.
It gives you the tools to get the most out of life, and the power to shape your future. It’s the key to knowledge, confidence and inspiration. It’s better results at school, and better jobs. If children grow up without the tools to communicate, without books to read or opportunities to write, it’s harder to get where you want to go.
The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity helping people overcome these challenges and change their life chances through the power of words – reading, writing, speaking and listening. From first words, through school days to training, jobs and beyond.
· We work collaboratively in local communities, focusing our work in 20 areas of the UK that are facing the biggest challenges.
· We support schools, developing the most effective tools and techniques and providing resources and programmes to engage and inspire children.
· We campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and decision-makers.
· We support vulnerable adults, people in the criminal justice system and young offenders’ institutions to build their literacy skills
What we offer you
Our team are passionate about our mission and we have a strong and positive working culture, based on shared values and respect. We offer a range of flexible working options and promote a workplace where you can be yourself and contribute to our success, whoever you are.
As well as a competitive salary, we offer benefits including a generous leave allowance totalling 39 days (including bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year), pension contributions of 8% of annual salary, a cycle to work scheme, employee assistance programme and other health and wellbeing benefits.

About Global Witness
Our goal is a more sustainable, just and equal planet where humanity is propelled forward, away from the toxic practices of the past. This means fossil fuels staying in the ground, climate-critical forests standing tall and those on the frontline fighting the climate crisis, who defend our planet, are protected from persecution and attacks.
We want justice for those disproportionately affected by the climate crisis: people in the global south, indigenous communities and communities of colour, women and younger generations. And that the necessary energy transition is done equitably and with the interests of those groups in mind.
To do this we have to stand up to the corporate drivers of the climate crisis - the fossil fuel companies that continue to extract and burn when the science is telling us to stop, the global banks financing deforestation and the businesses that turn a blind eye, or worse are complicit in, attacks on defenders.
For us to succeed, we need to embody the principles we fight for. Global Witness strives for cohesion, solidarity, and inclusion as only together can we protect one another and the planet to build a better and more just future.
About the role
Working across Global Witness’s campaigns within a larger data team, you will support our larger data investigations. Using a range of tools and techniques, including data storytelling, analysis, bots and webscraping, you will highlight the role of corporations in worsening the environmental and climate crises.
About you
You will bring core data specialist skills, in particular in financial analysis, natural language processing, remote sensing and accessing and using open data.
We want to evolve, grow and develop and so want to hear the data analysis and presentation skills you could bring to our work.
Finally, you’ll have a strong affinity to Global Witness’ values, working collaboratively internally and externally to achieve maximum impact.
Working for us
Global Witness has a talented team of people worldwide with offices in London, Washington DC, and Brussels. We aim to be a diverse and inclusive place to work. We value new perspectives, original ideas, and different ways of working. We believe that diverse views and experiences improve the way we do our work. We do our best to make our jobs accessible to all regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, or identity.
We offer an excellent benefits package including a competitive salary and 25 days annual leave (excl. Bank Holidays). We also offer healthcare insurance, wellbeing days and policies to support you during key life events.
This role is based in London and therefore to be considered you must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK. We are working under a hybrid working model which requires at least 2 days in the office.
